Bamboo dumplings (Sasa dango) introduction

Famous as a specialty of Niigata prefecture, “Sasa dango” is a ball-shaped dumpling made by wrapping mugwort dumplings with bean paste in bamboo leaves and tied at both ends with sedge or rush strings. It has been eaten in parts of Niigata, such as the Chuetsu and Kaetsu regions of Niigata since about 500 years ago, and there are several theories on the origin, but bamboo has a bactericidal effect, so it is considered a portable preserved food during the Sengoku period and “Uesugi Kenshin made it a portable food.” It seems that the theory is influential. Recently, exports outside the prefecture and overseas have become popular, and it can be said that it is a traditional confectionery with a high degree of recognition and popularity.
