Kamo Nabe (Duck Hot Pot)
Recognized on the “100 Best Local Cuisines” list by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries
Kamo Nabe (Duck Hot Pot) introduction
Kamo Nabe (鴨鍋) is a traditional hot pot dish made using wild mallard ducks that migrate from Siberia to Lake Biwa during winter. The firm, flavorful duck meat is simmered together with vegetables, tofu, and other ingredients to create a warm and hearty meal. Historically, ducks caught in nets originally set up for Lake Biwa fish were used for this dish. Today, duck hunting is permitted only during the winter season, allowing locals and visitors to savor duck delicacies from November to March. This dish is a cherished winter tradition in the Kohoku area of Shiga Prefecture and stands as one of Shiga's iconic regional specialties, alongside Funazushi. It has also been honored by being included in the “100 Best Local Cuisines” list selected by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
