Iwato mochi
Famous confectionary rich in flavor from Ise, born from a mythical settingIwato mochi introduction
The famous confectionary “Iwato Mochi” from Ise City, Mie Prefecture, is a Japanese confectionary created after “Iwato Kagura,” where Tenmei Onna no Mikoto (Sweet Uzume no Mikoto) danced in Japanese mythology. This mochi is manufactured and sold by the long-established store “Iwatoya” located in Oharai-cho in front of Ise Jingu Naiku. Iwato mochi is a bite-sized Japanese confectionary made with soft mochi dough made from carefully selected mochi rice, wrapped in Koshian made from the finest red beans from Hokkaido, and sprinkled with savory soybean flour. Its elegant, subdued sweetness and smooth texture are familiar to many people. Mochi rice is rich in carbohydrates and is an excellent energy source. In addition, adzuki beans contain dietary fiber, B vitamins, and minerals, and contribute to maintaining health. Soybean flour contains protein and isoflavones derived from soybeans, and is a food with high nutritional value. Iwato mochi is perfect not only as a souvenir from visiting Ise-jingu Shrine, but also as an everyday tea treat or gift. Its rich flavor goes great with Japanese tea, and we especially recommend enjoying it with sencha or roasted green tea. Also, since it has a modest sweetness, it is preferred as an after-meal dessert. Iwato mochi, which is filled with Ise history and culture, is a superb dish that you can enjoy while feeling the world of mythology. When you visit Ise, be sure to pick up these traditional Japanese sweets.
