Wasanbon
Colorful, intricately shaped treats that bring gentle comfort
Wasanbon introduction
Wasanbon (和三盆) is a premium, hand-crafted sugar from the Sanuki region, made from sugarcane grown in a small, specialized area. This sugarcane, nurtured in the warm, low-rainfall climate of Kagawa Prefecture, creates a uniquely smooth and mellow flavor that defines Wasanbon as a top-quality sugar. The process of making Wasanbon begins in early spring with the planting of sugarcane, which is harvested in December. The stalks are pressed, and the extracted juice is simmered down to produce a golden-hued sugar known as "shiroshita" sugar. This sugar is then wrapped in cotton bags and pressed repeatedly with a wooden press called an oshibune, while skilled artisans knead and refine it by hand on trays, removing impurities and enhancing its gentle sweetness. It is said that the name "Wasanbon" originated from the custom of repeating this process three times ("sanbon" in Japanese). Each melt-in-your-mouth piece of Wasanbon offers a tender sweetness that gently soothes and warms the heart.
